The microgrid - a 60-megawatt-hour (MWh) long-duration system - will be one of the first of its kind in the United States. The grant is one of the largest state awards to benefit a tribal government and the first under California’s new $140 million Long-Duration Energy Storage Program. The California Energy Commission issued the grant to Anaheim Hills, Calif.-based Indian Energy LLC, which plans to deploy a state-of-the-art microgrid that will provide renewable backup power for the Viejas Tribe of Kumeyaay Indians. A Native-owned energy company will leverage $31 million in state funding to create a long-duration energy storage system for a southern California tribe.
